Film Club Insider - Part 1

Forums

Workshops and guidance are vital when beginning a journey as a team, especially for newcomers, as they help develop knowledge and skills that help one learn essential concepts related to their field, find inspiration or new ideas never considered before, as well as offer fresh perspectives and educational experiences. Keeping all this in mind, the University Film Club had organised several workshops and forums for the 2022 session, throughout the month of March, in both offline and online modes.

Forums began with an introductory session on the 2nd of March, where members met up for an icebreaking meeting, followed by a general foundation of the club and its goals.

The first workshop on 10/3 was on ‘Acting’, which was in collaboration with the AMU Drama Club. All members regardless of their main interest took part, and learnt new tips from seasoned actors and performers on how to embody a character, on reel or on live stage.

Soon after was the ‘Scriptwriting’ forum on the 12th, this time along with the University Debate and Literary Club AMU, where club members were taught the basics of bringing ideas down onto paper and writing in proper screenplay format.

On the 14th the club covered ‘Basics of Cinematography’, led by the Student Convener of UFC, Mr. Syed Sohaib, a dedicated cinematographer himself. Members were exposed to the basics of photography and videography, through exciting on-hand activities! This increased engagement within the club and allowed everyone to be comfortable around each other.

The next agenda was ‘Critical Analysis and Review Writing’ on the 22nd. The short film of discussion was ‘2+2=5’ by Babak Anvari, where members were tasked with analysing the film and presenting their critiques. Right after that was the most exciting ‘In-House Bollywood Quiz’ which sparked everyone’s competitive sides! This great energy and Film-IQ rewarded them with cool prizes!

Following this was the meeting on ‘Fundamentals of DSLR Cameras’ on the 26th, an essential part of cinematography. Members with bare experience on the workings of a camera learnt all sorts of hacks and terms unheard before. This workshop was headed by experienced member Abdullah Iftikhar, his first of many more to come.

On the 29th there was another forum on ‘Cinematography’ by another senior member Danish Sohail, this time in more depth. This allowed participants to enhance their filmmaking knowledge. Members learned technical, creative, and analytical skills needed to excel in film.

Thus, these workshops made members get better acquainted with the process of filmmaking from scratch, and they gained practical knowledge to be applied in the very dynamic industry of cinema and filmmaking.
