 Film Making 101 Workshop (25th - 30th June 2022)

“If a million people see my movie, I hope they see a million different movies.”
- Quentin Tarantino

Over the past week, the University Film Club (UFC), led by the club’s Secretary Syed Mohd Sohaib, and Ahmad Mudassir, organised a 5-day Film-Making 101 Workshop at the Kennedy Auditorium of AMU. This workshop was handled by actor, director, and Programme Director of the Cultural Education Centre, AMU, respected Muzamil Hayat Bhawani Sir.

As an alumnus of the National School of Drama as well as the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, Muzamil Sir expertly focused on key aspects of film-production, such as directing, acting, cinematography, and post-production light and sound work. Throughout the event, Sir emphasized on the fact that this field is only practical, never theoretical. Film-making is simply a window that creators provide, it is up to the audience to decipher the view behind it.

Moreover, Muzamil Sir skilfully kept the entire workshop engaging and involved participants in tasks and exercises, such as simple video making on the basis of their favourite music, visualisation of their personal home, as well as on-stage activities to describe the significance of sound and light effects in cinema. The students came through with a large variety of creative videos, which were displayed and reviewed by fellow participants, along with distinctive feedback from Sir.

On the last day, Sir focused on the importance of angles and shot frames to convey various emotions. With several students on stage and Sir himself with a camera in his hands, he managed to capture the expressions and body language of the students that assisted him in acting. This informative workshop came to an end with Sir once again reminding us that one needs to be alert as a creator, and absorb the world around to familiarise oneself with it.

“Acting dariya ki tarah haiusmai behna nahi tairna hai”.
